Joseph R. Castaldo, age 93, of Lynn, died Tuesday, February 23, 2010 at the Kaplan Family Hospice in Danvers, after a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Rose (Muise) Castaldo, and the son of the late Nicholas and Anna (DiCostanza) Castaldo. Born and raised in Lynn, he has lived in Lynn all his life. Educated in Lynn schools, Joseph was a United States Coast Guard Veteran of World War II.
"Little Joe" worked 39 years at the GE River Works plant in Lynn, retiring in 1979.
Active in the IUE Local 201, he was Chairman of the strike committee during the 101 day strike in 1969 and served as an Executive Board Member for the Turbine Division, working twelve hour days to serve the 3000 members. Admired for his dedication and honesty, he was continuously re-elected until his retirement.
He is survived by his daughter Paula Stambaugh of Williamstown; sons Paul Castaldo and his wife Atsuko of Potomac, MD, John Castaldo and his wife Karen of Salem and Steven Castaldo of Danvers and Lynn; grandchildren Christina Mansfield, Tawnya Jalbert, Steven. Joseph and Michael Castaldo; great grandchildren, Danielle, Michelle, Janelle, Christie and Leo; great great grandson Christopher; daughter in law Lisa Burke. He was the brother of the late Gaetano "Charlie" Castaldo.
His funeral will be held in the SOLIMINE, LANDERGAN & RICHARDSON FUNERAL HOME, 426 Broadway (Rt129) Lynn on Monday at 10:30AM. Interment will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Lynn. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Visiting hours will be Sunday from 2-6PM. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of the North Shore, 75 Sylvan St. Suite B102, Danvers, MA 01923.
