He was the son of the late John and Vera McGurn of 8 Hampstead Avenue. He has 5 sisters; Shirley Boyce of Michigan, Peggy McGurn of North Billerica, Barbara Scholl of North Billerica, Mary Carhoun of Lecanto, FL, and Gail Dooley of Dracut. George also has two brothers; Edward McGurn of Tewksbury and Frank McGurn of North Billerica.
George graduated from Billerica High School in 1951 where he was the vice president of his class and was very active in sports. He then enlisted in the Air Force during the Korean War. He spent 3 years in England where he played baseball and later became the "Radar" of his squadron as the administrative aide to the Commanding Officer. He retired with the rank of Staff Sergeant.
He then enrolled at Salem State College where he met his wife, Gina. He continued his studies at Salem after his undergraduate degree and earned his Master's Degree. George was very active in baseball at Salem and captained his team in his senior year. George was also very active in the Billerica softball league and played 4 years for the Billerica semi-pro baseball team. The old timers in Billerica remember him as hitting the longest home run ever at the Koulrach ball field.
After graduating from college, George married Gina and joined the faculty of the North Reading School Department. For 34 years he served the North Reading community as a teacher and a counselor. At North Reading George introduced his Parenting Workshops and Parent Discussion groups for the North Reading Parents. After he retired from North Reading he continued to teach Parenting Workshops in Beverly, Salem, Peabody, Danvers, Reading and North Reading. Also, for 5 years George wrote a weekly column called "Family Life" for the Salem News.
George was the loving father of three wonderful sons; Ross of Reading, married to Kristin, Brian of Northbridge, married to Seenat, and Kevin of Newton. He was also the loving grandfather of four delightful grandchildren; Jess, Kyle, Corey and Julia.
George loved growing tomatoes. He loved learning, he loved reading, he loved writing, he loved teaching and he loved helping people. George was also an enthusiastic golfer. He spent 37 wonderful years as a member of the Beverly Golf and Tennis Club experimenting with his golf swing. Shortly before his death he said he was sorry he had so little time left because, "he was just this far from perfecting his golf game."
